A Survey of Internet Use by The Center for Research, Studies and Program Assessment of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Researchers and Their Citation’s Behavior to The Internet Sources

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of Internet by the Center for Research, Studies and Program Assessment of IRIB and their citation’s behavior to the Internet sources. The Bibliographies of 325 articles and papers written by researchers during the period 2000 to 2002 were analyzed to investigate how much internet sources have been used in researchers works. This survey has two hypotheses. 1- more than 50% researchers use the Internet. 2- Less than 50% researchers cite to the Internet resources. Hypotheses were conformed and the results show of researchers have access to the internet and 91% use the internet resources in their works. Most of them (55%) have access to the internet in their work offices. 39% of the researchers are familiar to the internet averagely and have obtained this familiarity by friends and colleagues (67%), self learning (55%). 66% of them have been familiar to the internet less than three years. Among various Internet services, Search engines (91%), Email (81%), News groups (50%), chat (39%) are used more. Researchers use Internet for the issues below: Recognition and collection of information sources for study activities (26/3%). Updating the professional and specialized information (25/6%). Detecting of unpublished information (20/9%) Researchers also recognize related internet resources by search engines and fallow links (17/36%). 30% of them express if there are no full text of results. they try to find through search engines in local and published resources, Email, file Transfer protocol (ftp) and corresponding to authors. It also shows that internet has important effects on quality, quantity and meeting the researchers study needs. They believe that internet causes: facility and rapidity in access to information (32.17%), saving time (29%) and comprehensive access to information sources (24%). comments of this study are: holding training courses for internet, creating the facility of access to recovered complete sources and publishing guidebooks and learning booklets.
